GTCSN, formerly referred as Turkana Development Organization’s Forum (TUDOF) is an umbrella of the local development organizations operating in the Greater Turkana County. The organization’s office is located in Lodwar town, in Turkana Central District, Turkana Central Constituency, and Rift Valley Province of Kenya. GTCSN was formed in 5th March, 2000 with an aim of giving voice to the Turkana society to demand for their rights to development and to engage Turkana communities in good governance. The organization is registered under the Ministry of Children, Culture and Social Services as CBO and in advance stages applied last year to the National Civil Society Congress.
In carrying out advocacy programme, GTCSN has been able to make the following achievements:
• In partnership with CEMIRIDE (Centre for Minority Rights and Development), we were able to get Kainuk town to be connected to power generated from Turkwell Gorge geo-thermal plant
• The organization was able to lobby and made international NGOs improve there working policies thus Turkana professionals relevant to the programmes were employed.
• The organization was also able to get Kenya Posts and Telecommunication Company to improve working conditions for their unskilled labourer working in optic fibre
• The organization was also able to organize the community to participate in various task force teams appointed to collect views from the society such as Kregler Commission, Committee of Expert on Constitutional Review, Constituency Development Funds, etc.
• Trained 10 Member Organizations on project management skills and this resulted in six organizations getting funding from resourceful partners
• The organization, in partnership with CEDMAC and CEMIRIDE has been conducting civic education, referred as Uraia Programme for a period of 3 years.
• Worked with UNDP-K (AMKENI WAKENYA) on civic education on referendum and is one of the Grantees of Amkeni Wakenya in Turkana South and Central
• Worked with CoE (Committee of Experts) in the four districts namely; Loima, Turkana East, North and West.
• Working with US- ADF in improving fishing industry in Turkana with four Beach Management Units in Kalokol and Kerio
The organization wishes to undertake two programs and is finalizing a concept on access to justice and devolution. This is meant to prepare Turkana residents on better approaches of electing better leaders of integrity with good track records. More so, to establish bunge la Wanainchi that will make the leaders answerable to the people thus have a strong and development conscious County.
