CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS TO DISCUSS THE COUNTRY’S PREPARATIONS FOR PEACEFUL 2012 ELECTIONS

Nairobi, October 27, 2011- Over 300 Delegates drawn a from all parts of Kenya will converge in Nyeri for the Third Civil Society Week from 31st October -4th November to discuss the country’s preparations for the 2012 Eletions. Hon. Mutula Kilonzo, the Minister for Justice National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs accompanied by the UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Aeneas Chuma will officially open the event on Tuesday 1st of November, 2011 at 9.00 am at Green Hills Hotel, Nyeri.

The Annual Civil Society Week is an initiative of Amkeni Wakenya,a UNDP- led Facility set up to promote democratic governance in Kenya. Amkeni Wakenya is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Embassy of Norway, the European Union and the Embassy of Sweden. It will be celebrated for the third time this year.

The theme for the 2011 Civil Society Week is: “Elections 2012: Are we Prepared?” Uchaguzi 2012; Je Tuko Tayari? The week- long events, which will be attended by more than 300 delegates from Civil Society organizations, will include Workshops, Exhibitions, sharing of best practices between CSOs, Government and other stakeholders, keynote presentations and discussions, and a Public Forum on the country’s preparedness for the 2012 Elections and its implications for democratic governance in Kenya.

This year’s Civil Society Week, the second to be marked since the enactment of the Constitution, is being held against the backdrop of the implementation of the Constitution as well as preparations for the 2012 General Elections. It will, therefore, be an opportune moment for reflection on the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead in respect of these issues. The thematic areas proposed are:
